    Touched by Light

    $20.00$65.00

The thick glass in our ensuite throws the pretty ribbons of light that you see in this painting. I must have looked hilarious with my tripod perched in the tub, a desk lamp clamped to the side, and myself crouching between its spindly legs trying to position my hands just right to catch the most amount of light in the few seconds that the sun peeked from behind the clouds. The awkward reference photo paid off though! This painting was a unique and enjoyable challenge.

I am coming to see that the only way that someone as flawed and weak as I am could possibly get to heaven is if Jesus bends down and picks me up in his arms, and lifts me to the heights of holiness himself. He is the one who will unwrap these ropes of doubt and sin and equip me with the grace to live this ordinary life with extraordinary love.

This was commissioned by a friend of mine to give to his bride as a wedding gift. The roses symbolize prayer, penance, and expiation.

I felt called to reproduce this image for a long time, and there was so much grace when I finally began to paint it. I found myself in tears more than once.

O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You.

    Our Lady of Sorrows

I was inspired for this painting during mass one day. As it was one of my first attempts at digital painting, I spent dozens upon dozens of hours working to get it just right. My dad has been selling magnetic prints of it from his site since the Christmas after I painted it, and it’s weird to walk into random people’s homes and see it stuck to their fridge.

I was inspired for this painting during adoration at a weekend retreat. My original idea was to have a priest saying mass in a classroom, but it eventually evolved into this. I incorporated a lot of symbolism into this image that I am still unpacking to this day.

    His Bride Waits

    $20.00$45.00

In the early days, women didn’t have charts and apps to track their fertility, but would have known the timing of their cycles by the phases of the moon. In that first month after Gabriel’s visit, Mary would not have felt too different than she had before. It would be months before she would show, and even longer before she would feel Jesus’ little flutters. But looking out at the face of a new moon, she would have known in a very concrete way that what the angel said was true. How her heart must have thrilled with joy!

    My Joseph

    $20.00$45.00

I painted this for the man who is now my husband, back when we were still courting. It was a pivotal point in our relationship as we discovered that although I have a father who’s faith is bold and charismatic—and that was very much what I was used to—my husband’s quiet strength is exactly what I need. He is like how I imagine St. Joseph must have been for Mary: often silent but never lacking in faith.

    Unexpected

    $20.00$45.00

I painted this image the day I found out I was expecting our first daughter. We were newly married and she was a surprise—”unexpected”, as it were. I found great consolation from Our Lady as I went through the intense and incredible journey of preparing for motherhood, knowing that she, too, experienced an unplanned pregnancy. Though unexpected, our little Clara Marian was totally meant to be!

    Joy of a Mother

Motherhood is the hardest thing I have ever done. It has broken me and humbled me in more ways than I thought possible. But there are moments—so many moments—when I look at my beautiful little girl and I am filled with the most incredible joy. Here is a soul that I have the privilege of journeying with and caring for, someone who calls me mama.

How great must Mary’s joy have been, to raise the Son of God? I think it must have been very great indeed!

For the longest time I believed I would become a sister, and in particular a Missionary of Charity. Something within me burned for a life of service to the poor, of humble but difficult work for the glory of God. Though it was not to be (God called me instead to the humble but difficult work of a mother), Mother Teresa remains a model of selflessness and quiet dignity for me. I hope I captured a glimpse of her beautiful soul with this painting.

I’ve always loved Padre Pio for his bold personality and his intense devotion to God in the midst of great suffering. I was young the day that JPII died, but I remember vividly the feeling of loss, as though a dear friend had passed away. Of course I never actually met Pope Saint John Paul II, but when I was inspired to begin painting a series of saints his was the first image I chose. Only now do I realize why: one of his greatest messages was the call for this generation to a New Evangelization. I am this generation, and this is but one small I way I can share Beauty and Truth with the world.

    Saint Maximilian Kolbe

Kolbe’s was a surprisingly difficult face to paint, with all its subtle slopes and planes, and many many hours went into this painting. But how could I expect any less than the grace to grow in perseverance when I am painting the image of a man who persisted in spreading the gospel in the midst of war, despite persecution and beatings, who willingly gave his life for a stranger, and even at the last, though he was starving, continued to praise God?

    Saint Therese of Lisieux

Therese is known for her “Little Way”, of perfect obedience in the smallest things. I should have known going into this painting that I would be called to just that! Sure enough, I had barely begin to mix my paints when my daughter became fussier than she’d ever been, demanding my attention every couple minutes. With paint drying on my palette, I comforted her again and again and again (and halfway through writing this sentence she woke up from her nap, calling for my attention yet again). This painting is testament that sometimes the greatest masterpiece is just doing God’s will in the small and unknown things.

How utterly romantic that God desires a relationship with us that is not only spiritual, emotional, or symbolic, but also physical. Like a man who is not satisfied with merely gazing at his beloved but leans forward to kiss her in all tenderness, so our God gives us His very body and blood—a free gift meant not only for the disciples who walked with Him, but for all who attend the Supper of the Lamb.

This is the castle where my great great grandmother on my mother’s side was raised. According to the story, she was knocked up by the gardener and disinherited. She moved to Canada where she worked as a hat maker to provide for herself and her infant son. She eventually married and raised a family. When she passed away her husband remarried, and his jealous new wife burned all of her things, including journals, clothes, and photographs—which is too bad, because those would have been super cool to look through. This castle, however, still stands as a historic landmark in Slovakia.

It is a dream of mine to visit there someday and experience in person this beautiful remnant of my family history.

    Valley of Despair

    $20.00$45.00

A world without God digs a valley within the boundaries of our physical reality, so as to be a tyrant over all that is contained within it. Inside those walls, we are master. We can prod and cut and examine the tangible world until she exposes all her secrets. By restricting ourselves to that which can be empirically proven and rejecting any possibility of the transcendent, we get to decide what gives our lives meaning, if it has any at all.

You could think of the carvings depicted in this image as great monuments erected by the people who walked this valley in ages past. A life without purpose is a haunting path to walk.
